Duncan Borrowman talks to Bullers Wood 6th Form12.00.00am BST (GMT +0100) Fri 23rd Apr 2004
Getting young people interested in politics is always hard, especially as it overwhelmingly the world of old men in suits. But Liberal Democrat London Assembly Candidate for Bexley & Bromley, Duncan Borrowman, spent a morning session with the sixth form of Bullers Wood School talking about the issues in this year's Mayoral, GLA and European elections. He also used his expertise as the Liberal Democrats National Campaigns Officer to talk about wider issues. Duncan, who has a daughter at Bullers Wood, said: "They were particularly interested to talk about tuition and top-up fees and how their further education should be paid for. They don't want to be in debt for the rest of their lives to pay for a further education. "It was really good to get some of the pupils engaged into thinking about political issues. When I asked them if any of them thought Crime was an important issue, hardly any hands went up - but when I asked how many felt unsafe travelling home at night, quite a few shot up. Getting young people to join together issues like this is important."
